HealthyNJ is a web-based, New Jersey-focused, consumer health website developed in 1999 by librarians at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, now part of Rutgers University. In its early years, the site was supported by grants from the New Jersey Library Association, Verizon, and the New Jersey State Library. As a result of the transition of most of UMDNJ to Rutgers, the site will now be maintained by librarians at the George F. Smith Library of the Health Sciences in Newark, effective July 1, 2013.
HealthyNJ has grown dramatically since its inception. In 2001, HealthyNJ began with 33 topics. Since then, Spanish language content has been added and topics now number over 500 in the various portals: Diseases & Conditions, Health & Wellness, Health in NJ, Just for Kids and Teens and Reference Desk.
Content on the pages is selected and developed based on criteria including currency, accuracy, and relevance. Links are constantly monitored for viability and changes are made as necessary. We strive to abide by the Health On the Net Principles and adhere to the guidelines put forward by the Health Summit Working Group.
Contributors to the site have included: Micki McIntyre (HealthyNJ Librarian, 2000-2013), Lisa Price (Spanish language sections), Harriet Whitlock and Walter Frihart, Site design & Artistic changes. Current additions, updates & maintenance will be provided by: Peggy Dreker (firstname.lastname@example.org).
